A few years ago my dad gave me a copy of something his mom, my grandmother, wrote in a journal. Granny, as us grandkids called her, was one of the most important people in my spiritual journey. I know for certain that she prayed out loud for everyone in her family everyday for as long as she could. I have no doubt that those prayers kept me from falling apart more than once in my life.
This particular journal included questions for her to answer throughout the year. I ran across the entry recently and think it is worth sharing. This particular entry asked what advice she would like to pass down to the generations after her. I wish the entry was dated. She passed away in 2014 so I am thankful to have her thoughts recorded.
Here is what she wrote.
What advice would you like to pass on to your children, grandchildren and great grandchildren?
“Wow! Loaded! Get alone when time permits and search your heart. Ask yourself questions. ‘What do I sincerely want? What kind of person do I want to be? Do I really have a personal relationship with Jesus Christ? Have I trusted Him as my Savior? Do I have peace, joy, contentment in my life? What are my friends like? Are they a good influence on me? Am I a good influence on them? Are they Christians that I can fellowship with, pray with, confide in, have fun with?’
The most important possession you will ever have is the Bible. Read it everyday. If you don’t read but one verse a day, READ IT!! It’s not a chore. It’s fun! Memorize a verse now and then.
A good positive attitude, good open communication with people and laughter are plusses in one’s life.”
That is about as good as it gets. It would probably be good for all of us to take some her advice as we head into 2024.
Thanks Granny.
